My friend wanted to show me BigScreen, which is a blend of AltspaceVR and old-fashioned screen sharing. They have a better understanding of what I'm trying to feel when I put on a headset.īut I wasn't ready to feel this. Now my VR times are mediated by friends and co-workers, which is way better. It was gentle way to start an afternoon of VR.Ī lot of my VR experiences so far have been "piloted." I don't own a system, and for a long while I couldn't own a system, so typically a press representative, a game developer, or an engineer would hand me a headset and I'd experience whatever they wanted me to experience. They were fun, although not quite mind-melting. I hadn't seen all these tech demos before. We started with Dreamscape, the official collection of short, passive VR experiences Oculus provides, which was great.
It's nice it makes VR feel a little more "social" and a little less "man cave." He has a nice apartment, and instead of hiding the Oculus away in a bedroom, he's devised a setup where you can sit at the kitchen table in his brightly lit living room. I went over to a friend's house the other day to have some quality time in his Oculus Rift. Something to wet your appetite while you save up for the CV1 kit.Warning: this post includes graphic content. A great starter package for first time VR users. I am using the MSI GTX 1050ti which is an entry level card and it works well on medium quality settings.ĭefinitely worth it! There's still lots that you can do with this kit. I just searched for Oculus Rift supported games within Steam that use a gamepad. Again there are a lot of games that don't require motion controllers.
Basically you need to opt into the beta participation programme in Steam and SteamVR for the DK2 to work, but it DOES work! I use the Steam Controller and it works well with the DK2. You just have to load them with the mouse on-screen.Īgain it wasn't straight forward to set up. Never mind though, there are still lots of free games and demos that work without the motion controllers, all of which you can access via the Oculus Home software. Unfortunately the VR interface needs the hand controllers (not supported by the DK2) so you are stuck with using the on-screen menu only. You then have to skip the hardware checks because it says it doesn't detect the headset (but it works anyway).

Setup required me to run a command (I found on a forum) in Command Prompt to bypass a buggy update check.

It was not easy to set up the software because the latest version of Oculus Home no longer officially supports the DK2. I would only recommend the DK2 to the more 'tech savvy' individual who wants to try out VR on a budget. You really do just want to reach out and flip those switches. I was totally overwhelmed looking around the cockpit of the Apollo and Elite ships. I was blown away by the immersion of these two titles, the depth it gives you the first time ýou try it.

The best bit of course are the games and i have quickly tried Apollo 11 and Elite Horizons within the short space of time i have had with this unit, less than two hours including install time.

Im using windows 10 on a MSI Z170a board with a i56500 and GTX1060. Sharpness can be ok but not to clear TV standards so dont expect pin sharp 1080p.ĭue to unfamiliarity it took me a couple of goes to get things right but its not too hard, out of the box and working less than an hour. You might have to adjust the head unit up or down in situ for a sharper screen.

The head unit can be adjusted to give full coverage and the A lenses are the best if you wear glasses. I found the steam set up the most straight forward. Both programs will go through a centering setup of the sensor. Once software and hardware is set up you can go to the Oculus home screen or install Steam VR and use that. On my setup it said it could not find my head unit but it still works ok.
I didnt need the extra sdk files from the site. Just skip most of the install, dont plug any hardware in before you do this step. So when you go to install your constantly told its not supported. The hardest part is installation of the Oculus setup file, found on their website, this is mainly due to the fact that Oculus dont support the product anymore. The DK2 is a great introduction to VR if your unsure wether to splash out on a CV1.
